Sydney, Australia (March 18, 2014) – Australia-based IC3D, a leading provider of hardware and software solutions for the Manufacturing, Architectural and Engineering industries, has released a new version of translationXpert, the rapid language translation software it developed for SolidWorks.

Distributed nationally in Australia and New Zealand by IC3D sister company Intercad – the largest SolidWorks distributor in the region – translationXpert revolutionises the way designers collaborate with colleagues and other designers around the world in their native languages.

New functionality in translationXpert 2.0 means any SolidWorks drawing (including DWG imports) can now be automatically translated and output as a foreign-language PDF document. The software has also been upgraded to work seamlessly with SolidWorks Enterprise PDM’s workflow engine, allowing translations of SolidWorks documents to be generated automatically on release.

“translationXpert has changed the way many of customers do business, helping them overcome communication bottlenecks, reduce turnaround times on global projects, and eliminate issues that have literally been ‘lost in translation’,” says Intercad Sales and Marketing Director Mark Deere-Jones.

“With the new enhancements to the software, not only have we expanded its reach through the use of company-wide custom dictionaries for multiple foreign languages, but also given our customers anytime, anywhere access to Intercad’s Global Dictionary,” says Deere-Jones. “SolidWorks Enterprise PDM integration adds another layer of usability, allowing PDM customers to continue working with foreign partners irrespective of location and without deviating from their original workflows.”

By alleviating the need for designers to manually translate feature names, drawing annotations, custom properties, configurations, display states, title blocks and tables, translationXpert is a valuable tool for designers working in today’s multinational environment. It is best suited to fabricators, industrial designers, tool designers and professionals in related engineering fields that use SolidWorks and need to collaborate with international partners, work for overseas clients, or submit their foreign-based manufacturing orders to tender.

“The translation engine is fast and efficient, and takes just a few seconds to output a document in a foreign language,” says Deere-Jones. “Most importantly it’s fully integrated into SolidWorks, so designers don’t need to work outside the SolidWorks environment or waste time learning another application.”

SolidWorks powered South Australian electronics manufacturer Redarc is approaching the end of a two year development cycle for their latest vehicle braking product, the Tow-Pro electronic brake controller.

It’s been a gruelling trial of their design, testing and engineering skills. The unit launched in Australia in early June, and now Redarc is looking for lessons to take with them to the international market in the coming months.

Manufacturers’ Monthly sat down with Redarc’s Managing Director, Anthony Kittel, and the Lead Design Engineer of the Tow-Pro, Timothy Fosdike, to hear about the process from conception to export.

MotoCzysz builds the world’s fastest electric racing motorcycle. Since introducing the C1 prototype in 2006, the Oregon-based innovator has produced a series of electric bikes that drive the top-winning race team on the electric motorcycle racing circuit. The MotoCzysz E1pc model routinely pushes 200 mph. To drive motorcycle design, the company needed a robust 3D design environment that supports both engineering and style requirements.

SolidWorks EPDM Notifications not working? No worries!!

$

Notifications in SolidWorks are a great way to notify (and be notified!) when a file(s) changes status, moves from a folder, or just send a message to someone else in the organisation.

Sample Notification from within EnterprisePDM

However, these notifications are dependent on a central part of the EnteprisePDM  system, the Database server (DB Service).

If this DB service is stopped for any reason, then your notifications will not be sent. Common reasons for stoppage include server updates, shut-downs, scheduled maintenance etc.

Today I want to show you a simple way to ensure that this service always keep running, using the steps below:

1) On the server where you have the EnterprisePDM Database Server installed (most often where you have SQL installed), go to Start, type in Services

Access Services

2) In the Services window, scroll down until you find SolidWorks Enterprise PDM Database Server

3) Right-click on this service, Properties, and ensure that the Startup type is set to Automatic as in the image.

That’s it! This will ensure that if the server has to be ever restarted, this services will start automatically.

For extra credit, you can also use a very simple batch file and run a task so that the DB server service will restart on a schedule.

I hope you find this useful. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at prasad.bhonsule@intercad.com.au

Best regards,

Prasad Bhonsule

SolidWorks Inspection – Streamline your Quality Assurance Process

$

Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC respectively) is something that any company involved in manufacturing and assembly has to deal with. Quite often, very tight manufacturing tolerances are needed, and if they are not met, the cost of redesigning/reworking can be significant.

Quality assurance has traditionally been a laborious, manual and repetitive process, with much scope of human error when entering in nominal and toleranced dimensions.

SolidWorks Inspection, a new product from SolidWorks can greatly increase automation and accuracy when creating drawings and documents for quality assurance.

It comes in two handy interfaces:

- A standalone package for analysing PDFs and TIFFs

- A integrated SolidWorks add-in for working directly with SolidWorks drawing files.

With both, the user simply identifies key dimensions, notes, geometric tolerances, adds extra information as needed, and then exports the results out as an Microsoft Excel Worksheet.

Easily identify key dimensions, tolerances and notes

Export results out in industry-standard formats

SolidWorks Inspection also come in two packages designed to best suit the users needs:

- Solidworks Inspection Standard, for inspecting documents and creating First Article Inspection Reports

- SolidWorks Inspection Professional, with all the capabilities of Standard, plus the ability to import result data from CMM machines.

With SolidWorks Inspection, you can make your quality assurance process much more efficient, and reduce the chance of data entry errors and costly rework.

Intercad Technical Tip – Installing SolidWorks on multiple PC’s

$

Tired of updating Multiple PC’s at your site – if you maintain SolidWorks on more than 1 PC then you could consider using an Admin Image.

Have you had the situation where multiple users on your site are all downloading and installing service packs separately? Using up valuable bandwidth and productive time – if so then using an admin image is just what you need

An admin image allows you to install on multiple PC’s concurrently. When the admin image is Service Packed all the clients can be automatically updated – a huge time saver

Creating an admin image is now very easy using the SolidWorks Installation Manager. Gone are the days of needing to create multiple admin images for each add-in product using command line syntax.

The SolidWorks Installation Manager guides you thru the simple process of creating an Admin Image that can contain all the add-ins available including the likes of SolidWorks
Simulation & Motion.

A full guide is available on the Customer Portal once you’re logged in take the link for Admin Guides under the references section. Then select the SolidWorks Installation and Administration Guide – once there you can browse to the section on Admin images as shown below

Once your image is created you still have the ability to edit options if you have specific requirement for various PC’s – for example you may need to change serial numbers or add-ins that are being installed. As below you can change the settings globally or for a group or machine.

I would encourage you start using an Admin Image its well worth the effort and will save you and your staff allot of time…

Intercad Technical Tip: Flattening a conveyor screw flight in SolidWorks

$

I came across this a few years ago when looking to flatten a screw conveyor
flight. I believed it couldn’t be done but here’s how….

Create a sketch on the front plane and place a 100 mm diameter circle on it.

Use this to create your first Helix/Spiral using the Pitch and Revolution option.
Select Constant Pitch of say 600mm and 1 clockwise revolution starting at 0
degrees.

Repeat this with the same settings but use a larger diameter circle say 500mm.

Now comes the tip – Create two 3D sketches one for each helix. In the first 3D
sketch select the helix and use the convert entities command. This will place a
spline in the 3DSketch with an On edge relation to the helix. Repeat converting
the second helix in the second 3D Sketch to make a second spline.

The rest is easy

Go to the Insert>Sheet metal>Lofted bends and select the two 3DSketches as
the profiles using a thickness of say 6mm.

Your flight is now finished and ready to be flattened

ePDM 2014 is supported on Windows Server 2012 R2 from service pack 3. One of the things you may not know is that when you set ePDM up on the server the .net framework 3.5 isn’t installed by default. You can’t install it by clicking on the install files either. You will have to have the media for the windows server and then you will have to enable it in the server management tools.
